Oscar winning actor Morgan Freeman has been seriously injured in a car accident in north Mississippi. Freeman was driving on Highway 32 when he swerved to overcorrect his 1997 Nissan Maxima and the car flipped several times.

The jaws of life were used to extract both Freeman and his female passenger from the car. Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesperson Ben Williams said both were airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, although the condition of the female passenger is unknown.

Freeman, a co-owner of the Memphis club Ground Zero Blues, currently appears in the blockbuster The Dark Knight. He has two films in post production (The Code and The Lonely Maiden), one in production (The Last Full Measure), and one in pre-production (The Human Factor).
